John graduated first in his class from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, on July 21, 2011. He studied Arabic. Here he is pictured with Lieutenant Colonel Greg Christiansen, the head of DLI. (Incidentally, LTC Christiansen had studied with John’s uncle Walter at BYU in 1988–89.)
