After high school graduation, Weldon went to Ricks College for a year, served as a missionary in Japan for 29 months, received a B.A. in music theory from BYU, and began an M.A. degree in musicology and organ. Barbara finished high school, attended BYU, then taught at O.E. Bell Jr. High School in Idaho Falls. They went on a handful of dates during that time.
