Barbara and Weldon decided to visit Missy, Kody, and Abby in Lakenheath, UK. They flew from Salt Lake City to London Heathrow Airport, leaving August 9, 2005, and arriving August 10. They rode the Gatwick Express (train) to London, then the subway (tube) to King’s Cross, then the train to Cambridge and finally Brandon. Here Barbara is shown sitting with the bags at Brandon Station awaiting Kody and Missy to take her and Weldon to their quarters in Lakenheath.

On the London Metro to London, August 11, 2005. Missy drove from Lakenheath to the outskirts of London and parked a rented VolksWagen car, then went with 10-month-old Abby, Barbara, and Weldon to downtown London. The Metro wasn’t terribly crowded on this particular day.

A trip to Bush St. Edmunds Cathedral followed the next day, August 12, 2005. Here Barbara, Missy, and Abby are shown strolling through the gardens there. It was at Bury St. Edmund’s on November 20, 1214, that Cardinal Langton swore at the altar that they would obtain from King John the ratification of the Magna Charta.

Ten-month-old Abby was a very pleasant traveling companion. Here she is, smiling, at the Bury St. Edmund’s Cathedral, August 12, 2005.

Abby was all smiles after breakfast in Lakenheath, UK, on August 13, 2005.

On Sunday afternoon, August 14, 2005, we visited the University of Cambridge. One of the stops there was the Whipple Museum of the History of Science.

On August 15, 2005, Missy drove us to St. Mary’s Church in Bocking, England. Missy’s 10th great grandfather, John Whipple, was christened in this church in 1596. He migrated to Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1638.

On August 16, 2005, Barbara and Weldon rode the Chunnel train under the English Channel to Brussels, then traveled to Amsterdam (and eventually to The Hague, Versailles, and Paris). Barbara was able to see many Vermeer paintings (also many other wonderful paintings) in person. Here Barbara is shown next to Vermeer’s “The Kitchen Maid” in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, August 17, 2005.

From Amsterdam it was a short train ride to The Hague to see paintings (including Vermeers) in the Mauritshuis there. Here Weldon is shown outside the Den Haag Centraal Station, August 17, 2005.

Weldon and Barbara caught an early train from Amsterdam to Paris on August 18, 2005. In Paris they dropped their luggage off at their hotel, then headed to Versailles. Here Barbara is shown standing next to an equestrian statue at Versailles, on August 18, 2005.

2007

On May 26, 2007, Barbara and Weldon went with Anthea’s children to Heber City, UT, where Thomas the Train was visiting “in person” [?]. L-R in front of Thomas: Jaxon, Anthea, Cameron, Bella. We had a train ride, food, balloons, and fun entertainment.
In August 2007 my insurance company wrote to inform me that they were canceling my homeowner’s insurance on October 20, because we hadn’t re-roofed our house. (They said that they had notified us the previous October. My assertions about not receiving the notice fell on deaf ears.) I telephoned my cousin the roofer, who sold me a new roof. This photo—taken on October 8—was 12 days before the deadline. Fortunately, the insurance company didn’t cancel our insurance! Our 1998 Toyota Tacoma Pickup is in the driveway.
As 3-year-old Abby went for a walk with grandparents Weldon and Barbara around the neighborhood, she spied a large rock in the yard of Gary and Holly Glover. Here she is, having successfully climbed up the rock. November 16, 2007.
