Shared Objects, top

Some things I occasionally forget:

Linux Shared Objects:

Soname
libname.so.n (typically a symlink to the shared library’s real name)
Real name
libname.so.n.major[.minor] (this is the actual file)
Linker name
libname.so (books say this is a symlink to the soname; in practice it is a symlink to the real name?)
  • ldconfig command refreshes the shared objects
  • /etc/ld.so.cache

top

On CentOS (and likely other OSes): After typing top …

  • Type “1” followed by “f”
  • Then select the fields (columns) you would like displayed.
